- Scalp massages before wash day; budget shoppers who want a cheap staple

- Rosemary, mint, biotin, tea tree, eucalyptus
Why it ranks here. By far the most-discussed hair oil online, with a genuinely massive review base (100,000+ Amazon reviews, reportedly 700,000+ repeat buyers) and constant Reddit/YouTube chatter. It is a 2 oz bottle around $8.96, making it the cheapest entry point on this list, and it has both a huge fan base and a very public 2024-2025 controversy (viral TikTok hair-loss claims, class-action lawsuit, alleged reformulation after the brand was bought by P&G) that gives a rare, unusually candid before/after picture of consumer sentiment.
Long-time users generally praise it for calming an itchy/dry scalp, adding shine, taming frizz, and slowing shedding when massaged in before wash day; several commenters describe using a few drops on the scalp the night before washing, or leaving it on for hours under a cap. The recurring complaints are: (1) a subset of users, especially since the P&G acquisition, report increased shedding/hair loss and suspect a reformulation or counterfeit bottles sold by third-party sellers; (2) some curly/high-porosity users say it causes stickiness, brittleness, or what they call 'protein overload'↗ (though commenters in r/curlyhair note it has very little actual protein and the effect is more likely from the oil blend or wet-hair fragility); (3) essential-oil-heavy formula (rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus) can trigger allergic reactions/itchy scalp in sensitive users. Multiple commenters recommend buying only from Mielle's own site/Amazon due to counterfeits.
What owners like
- Massaged into the scalp before wash day, users consistently report a calmer, less itchy scalp and softer, shinier hair the next morning
- The cheapest oil here, with the largest and most active review base of any product researched
What owners complain about
- A wave of long-time users report more shedding and scalp irritation since P&G bought the brand, and several are convinced the formula changed
- The heavy essential-oil blend (rosemary, mint, tea tree, eucalyptus) can cause brittleness or irritation in sensitive or high-porosity curly hair
- Counterfeit bottles from third-party sellers are widely blamed for bad experiences. Buy from Mielle or a verified retailer
“I used it for years and def noticed a change in formula. You use a product for years and any change is very noticeable. I was almost gaslit to believe it was due to medical issues for my increase in shedding. Seeing the others online experienced the same thing made me toss all my products.” — YouTube comment · @tinaspice · 2025-05-11

I have noticed slowing hair loss since I started using it, but not a big difference in growth yet. I have been using it for most of this summer but I don’t use it every time I wash or anything, so that could be limiting it. My hair is happy though!

You should massage it in your scalp the night before washing your hair. Last night I used it on my whole hair length and put my hair in a silky cap. The next day I washed my hair and it was so straight, soft and pretty and I didn’t even have to flat iron it.

It does have biotin which is a protein, but it's pretty far down the list. What I think is more likely is that all the oils in it are either: 1) Preventing water from properly penetrating into your hair when you're washing it. If you're washing with a co-wash or a really gentle shampoo, you might not actually be washing the oil out and it could be a barrier to your hair getting proper hydration, so your hair ends up dry from the core and brittle. or 2) if you're applying it to wet hair, it could be keeping your hair wet for too long.

It's more than likely not protein overload, as there's almost no protein in the product. My guess is that your hair isn't reacting well to one of the oils in the blend. Penetrating oils (ones that have fatty acids) can make the hair brittle like that in some cases. Most people have this effect with coconut oil, but other ones can do it too.

It maximizes hair growth. Please remember to massage your scalp gently for 5 minutes after application. It also thickens your hair. Win win.

This stuff really works, I have tried them all!! This is effective ❤ massage after application!!

It works! I’m 18 and I noticed my left side of my hairline was receding so I started eating healthy, drink more water and use rosemary oil after 6 months it slowly grew back

I transitioned from finasteride and rogaine to onion juice and saw palmetto and my results have been staggering. No ugly transitional period ECT. I added rosemary oil three months ago and it's enhanced my results outrageously. I wish I knew these methods far earlier

It'd actually the best beard oil I've ever used, great for strengthening and growth with the rosemary and mint I bought some caster oil and use a mix of it every day!

My mom actually has that same hair oil and ive been using it for a week now and my hair has been getting less dandruff and my hair is not that dry anymore

The people that have had hair loss could be because there are websites selling fake Mielle oil bottles . So everyone reading this BEWARE . I just found out recently and had to order my bottle directly from their website instead

I decided to get "Powder Brows". I was allergic to the dye! Yikes.😢 When I learned about this product I decided to try it. Im on 2.5mg minoxidil and 50mg Spironolactone for hair loss/ blood pressure. I was not expecting to see results until at least 3 months after starting this product. To my surprise I began to notice my eyebrows filling in after a few weeks. It has been a month and a half now and I'm excited... I use it twice a day very sparingly on my brows.

Girl you have awesome hair, despite what you think. Mine is thinning so bad, almost about bald on the left of my head. I am gonna go ahead and try the Mielle and jojoba remedy to see if it works for me 😭

Honestly, I was expecting this. Mielle used to be a small brand for black and brown girls with textured hair which we learned to trust. Then it went viral, they sold out to big brands and suddenly the formulas weren't the same quality anymore. It's so disappointing. I make my own rosemary mint oil and scalp spray now.

Before mielle got bought used that oil a lot. And it gave me a bit of hair loss and a really itchy scalp. I find a lot of these “natural hair brands” use a lot of essential oils that are irritating to a log of ppl and provide no real clarifying shampoos to wash them out. At this point I use matrix and cecred and the doux and dassit! Hair is waistlength now and very manageable

As a random white lady with straight hair who received this as a gift, I didn’t even know it was a POC brand. It works well for me, which should be a very clear indication that it’s no longer what it was and it seems obvious my hair needs are wildly different than black hair
