It’s tempting to look at the iPad 10 through the wrong end of the telescope. It’s easy to compare it to the iPad Air 4/5 and grumble about how it’s inferior and doesn’t hold up, regards feature set or pricing. But we should remember the insane value proposition it offers, especially in the USA. I picked one up for work (£499.99) as I didn’t want to spend too much but the cheaper Gen 9 model was dated and showing it’s age... For the times I’ve had to use it at work, the iPad 10 absolutely devours all tasks because it’s an extremely capable iPad; it surfs, streams, plays games and does productivity really well and is built (unlike the flexible/warping Air 5 LCD) like a tank.— YouTube comment · @stuartanderson2314 · 2023-05-22 · on the #1 pick, Apple iPad (10th Gen)

Best for
First tablet, students, casual browsing/streaming/note-taking

1st-gen Apple Pencil or USB-C Pencil (needs adapter); no Pencil Pro

Why it ranks here. The base iPad is the most reviewed tablet there is, bought as a first tablet, a student device or a gift, and argued about at length because tech reviewers call it poor value next to the iPad Air while its owners disagree.

Owners are content in a way tech reviewers are not. 'iPad 10 is legit the most basic iPad possible, and that is what most people need', says one. A chef uses it 'everyday all day' for recipes and prep lists. A husband bought one for his wife and it 'was the perfect computer for her'. One work buyer says it 'absolutely devours all tasks' and is built 'like a tank'. A year in, one owner still loves it and the battery is fine. The gripes: the base model's 64GB is 'way too low' and the only step up is 256GB; the Apple Pencil situation is odd, since it takes the old first-generation Pencil or the USB-C one, and one owner uses a knock-off; and the happy buyers mostly waited for a sale, one paying $290 on Prime Day. One unit went black while charging at 8% and would not come back.

What owners like

  • 'absolutely devours all tasks' and is built 'like a tank', says a work buyer; 'the most basic iPad possible, and that is what most people need', says another
  • The tablet non-technical people love: 'This iPad is perfect for me', from a chef who uses it 'everyday all day'
  • A year in, owners report no slowdown and a battery that is still 'great'

What owners complain about

  • Base storage is 64GB, 'way too low' for one owner, and the only other option is 256GB
  • Pencil support is odd: the old first-generation Pencil or the USB-C Pencil, not the Pencil Pro; one owner uses a knock-off
  • List price is poor value next to the iPad Air; happy buyers waited for a sale, one paying $290 on Prime Day

  • I bought the 10th gen iPad for my wife. She loves it! She does not use the pencil and charges the unit at night. Battery life was an important benefit for her. She also likes the new magic keyboard with a touch pad in the middle. She does not object to any screen glare. It was the perfect computer for her.

It was overkill because my use case with it was write and check emails on the go. Therefore, this iPad is perfect me as a basic user.

I also found myself watching things on it sometimes, scrolling pinterest/social media, and a new found love for games LOL... since then (10 months now), I've only used my iPad for note taking. now as im on summer break, I have practically not opened my iPad.

Buyers who want S Pen + DeX productivity without flagship pricing
Pen/Stylus Support
S Pen included in the box

Why it ranks here. The most talked-about mid-range Android tablet, with an S Pen in the box and a big review whose comment section is full of people confirming they bought one on sale. It is the tablet Reddit recommends over the pricier Tab S9 line.

The word is 'steal'. One buyer paid $350 and 'Couldn't get over the fact what the tablet offers and that price. It's basically a steal'; another watched the price drop from $449 to $349 at checkout; a third in India paid about $210. It is 'little bit too good' for basic note-taking, and one owner plays Xbox Game Pass on it. The costs come later: the official keyboard's price 'threw me for a loop', one owner noticed white spots on the screen after two years, and another's Wi-Fi and YouTube playback went bad a year in. One LCD broke, but its owner sat on it.

What owners like

  • 'It's basically a steal' at the $350 sale price, with the S Pen in the box
  • Recommended over the pricier Tab S9 in buying-advice threads for nearly the same experience
  • Handles Xbox Game Pass streaming and note-taking, and is 'little bit too good' for basic notes

What owners complain about

  • One owner found white spots on the screen after two years, and another's Wi-Fi and video playback degraded a year in
  • The official keyboard cover's price 'threw me for a loop'
  • The sale price is the real price; list is $449

Thanks for an excellent expectation review with the price this tablet comes with. I had to buy one at the sale price of $350. Couldn't get over the fact what the tablet offers and that price. It's basically a steal. Again excellent review!!— YouTube comment · @j350zr7 · 2023-11-20

Why it ranks here. Samsung's entry-level tablet has one of the biggest comment bases of any budget tablet, full of first-person purchase stories, gift stories and long-term reports. The 8GB version is the one owners recommend.

Casual users are the fans. 'I'm a casual user and I don't expect much from a tablet. But this thing exceeds my expectations', says one who prefers it to his old iPad mini. Another calls it the 'best $120 I ever spent' and uses it more than his phone. One with the 8GB model 'used it to replace my laptop', and it is 'miles ahead of the Tab A8'. The complaints: one A9+ developed a green line and ghost touches while streaming, never dropped; the build is a step down from a five-year-old Huawei with a metal body and fingerprint sensor; and the 4GB version is not the one to buy.

What owners like

  • 'this thing exceeds my expectations', from a casual user who prefers it to his six-year-old iPad mini
  • The 8GB model is 'way better' than the 4GB one; one owner 'used it to replace my laptop'
  • 'best $120 I ever spent', and 'miles ahead of the Tab A8'

What owners complain about

  • One A9+ developed a green line and ghost touches while streaming, with no drop
  • The base A9 has no fingerprint sensor, and the plastic build is a step down from older premium budget tablets
  • Get the 8GB RAM version; the 4GB one is the compromise

My wife won one at the casino, gave it to me as a surprise gift. I love it. My first and only Android tablet ever. I'm enjoying using it all the time. • Samsung A8 is an ok-tablet when you factor the price, I paid £150 in UK, when you bear in mind my phone was £600 it is very much a complemtary backup phone... It makes me realise how good was Huawei, 5 years ago I got a sturdier metal body, a fingerprint sensor, faster charging, higher resolution noticeably crisper display. The small tablet market is badly exploited, this A9 was all I could find.

Best for
Reading, Prime Video/Kindle, an ultra-cheap kids tablet
Pen/Stylus Support

Why it ranks here. One of the most reviewed tablets anywhere, because it is the cheapest one that works for reading and streaming. Its owners split cleanly into people who want a Kindle with a screen and people who wanted an Android tablet and got Fire OS instead.

For reading and video it earns loyalty: one owner has used Fire tablets 'for more than one decade', another's two-year-old HD 10 'still looks amazing' after travel and knocks, and one notes that YouTube in the browser skips the mid-roll ads. £85 on Prime Day is the typical buy. Then Fire OS. 'Amazon Fire is horrible. iPad or nothing', says one Reddit user; another concedes it is 'technically a decent tablet, but Fire OS totally sucks'. The Amazon app store lacks basics, a German user could not get his library's e-book app, the YouTube app 'is not the best' and the Silk browser frustrates. Making it normal means sideloading Google Play or a tool called Fire Toolbox, which needs a computer and patience.

What owners like

  • Owners keep them for years: a decade of Fire tablets for one reader, and a two-year-old HD 10 that 'still looks amazing'
  • YouTube in the browser skips the mid-roll ads, a perk several owners mention
  • About £85 on Prime Day, which makes it an easy kids' or travel tablet

What owners complain about

  • Fire OS: 'Amazon Fire is horrible. iPad or nothing', and even a fan admits 'Fire OS totally sucks'
  • No Google Play out of the box; a normal Android experience needs sideloading or Fire Toolbox and a computer
  • The YouTube app 'is not the best' and the Silk browser 'can be frustrating'

I agree that the Fire HD 10 is technically a decent tablet, but Fire OS totally sucks. Expecting the OP to have a Windows or Linux computer and the tech knowledge to use the Fire Toolbox is not realistic.— Reddit comment · u/jrioux805 · r/tablets · 2026-08-29

Lenovo Tab Pen included in many bundles; input lag reported

Why it ranks here. The Tab M11 is the budget alternative r/tablets names against Samsung's A9+ and S9 FE, usually because it comes with a pen and a keyboard folio for the price of a bare tablet elsewhere. It is also the one with the angriest owner in this research.

The purchase story repeats: €170 or $130 with the pen and folio included, after balking at an iPad mini, and 'sod it', the cheap option. For sketching and streaming it works, and one owner coming from the older M10 says 'The build quality on the M11 is outstanding'. The limits are the chip and the memory. '4gb ram is too low', video tops out at 1080p, the pen delay 'is absolutely not fine', and one owner's tablet was 'great on android 13. Then 14 slowed it down. Then 15 slowed it way down'. The harshest verdict, a month after buying: 'Lenovo Tab M11 is too slow to use' and 'Neber buy that one. NEVER.'

What owners like

  • Pen and keyboard folio in the box for €170 or $130, less than the accessories alone cost for an iPad
  • 'The build quality on the M11 is outstanding', from an owner of the older M10
  • The 'sod it' pick after balking at iPad mini prices, and it does basic sketching and streaming fine

What owners complain about

  • '4gb ram is too low', and the pen delay 'is absolutely not fine'
  • Updates made it worse for one owner: 'great on android 13. Then 14 slowed it down. Then 15 slowed it way down'
  • One buyer a month in: 'Lenovo Tab M11 is too slow to use' and 'Neber buy that one. NEVER.'

Lenovo Tab M11 is too slow to use. Mediatek's 12nm Helio G88 with 4GB of RAM will provide you the worst experiences. (I bought that just a month ago.) Neber buy that one. NEVER.— Reddit comment · u/Brilliant-Hornet-405 · r/tablets · 2026-09-04

  • Got this for €170 with the pen and folio case included. All I want it for is some very basic sketching and I liked that I wouldn't have to buy anything extra. I originally wanted the iPad Mini but I was frankly appalled that they were asking 600 for a 60 htz screen. When I realised I'd have to buy the pen and case on top, I thought "sod it" and just went with a cheap option that would get the job done. And it does!

  • I loved owning my M11. It was a huge step up from the previous tablet I owned, the M10. They're totally different animals. The build quality on the M11 is outstanding.

  • Was gonna spend 400$ on an iPad but decided to do some research and save some money cause I would just be using to watch and stream and I’m happy to have found the 128gb with folding case and pen for 130 on amazon on sale

  • Got this as a gift today. it's alright for productivity and only cons- you can't watch videos above 1080p and 4gb ram is too low

  • Good review. To be honest at the price point I just ordered mine at $129 WITH case and pen. I love my S6 Lite but I recently dropped it and cracked it bad. So I hope this works reasonably similar and if so I will be more than happy.

  • I have a Lenovo Ideatab I really like it. Nice screen, fast, gets updates and is pretty affordable.

  • I bought a Lenovo Tab One tablet from Amazon - and it was defective out of the box. Touch screen wouldn't respond to touches. Lenovo customer service was helpful in diagnosing the problem and concluding that it was rusak; they offered to repair it, but they wouldn't replace it So I packed for return within an hour of receiving it. YMMV

  • Based on my tests the lenovo was better at web browsing and has a bigger screen than the ones available at best buy. It also has pen support which is huge.

Frequently asked questions

Is the base iPad enough?

For browsing, streaming and notes, yes. Owners call it the most basic iPad possible and say that is what most people need. The 64GB storage is the main complaint, and a sale price helps.

Are Fire tablets worth it?

Only for reading and Prime Video. Fire OS has no Google Play, and even fans call it frustrating. The Samsung Tab A9+ costs a little more and runs normal Android.

Which tablet comes with a pen?

The Samsung Tab S9 FE includes the S Pen, and the Lenovo M11 bundles a pen and keyboard for $130, though owners report pen lag. The iPad needs a separate Pencil.
