Heavy home users who want the strongest seal short of a chamber sealer

Why it ranks here. The machine the sous vide forums recommend most, and the one people buy after a FoodSaver wears out. The pump is stronger than the budget machines and it lays down two seal lines at once, which owners mention first; one has recommended it to six friends and family, another wore the buttons blank in five years and bought the same model again, and Costco rolls work fine in it.

Seal more than three bags in a row and it needs a few minutes to cool or it errors out, and cheap bags do not always seal tight. The failures are a real minority: one unit leaked air and was tossed, one owner had two die inside a year, and a two-year owner's sealing plate developed a bubble that burns through bags. The drip tray does not come out for cleaning.

What owners like

  • Double seal line
  • Owners at five to eight years
  • Strong pump

What owners complain about

  • Needs cool-down after three bags
  • Fixed drip tray
  • A minority fail early

  • I’ve had the Nesco for years and love it. Doesn’t do well when processing lots of fish since I think the sealing strip stays hot and doesn’t allow for the vacuum to work properly if you’re using it without letting it cool down.

  • I've had my Nesco for years. Two things to keep in mind. 1. You need to use the Nesco bags. If you try to go cheap they don't always seal tight. (Ask me how I know.) 2. You can't go sealing 1 after the other, non-stop. If you are sealing more than 3 things in a row, give it a few minutes in-between tasks. Otherwise it will overheat and either not seal well, or go into an error mode that will prevent you from sealing. Otherwise, we love it!

  • Have had the Nesco for almost 2 years now, love the double sealing strip, and have had no issues with it other than the teflon tape over the heating element coming off, but I also damaged one of the seals, and the kit I bought included some of the tape so it was more or less a non issue, just something to keep in mind. My biggest pet peeve with the Nesco is that the drip tray does not come out for cleaning.

  • I’m having a similar issue. I bought this because I’d heard it was one of the best for the money, but I’ve been pretty let down. It never seems to get all the air out no matter what I’m packaging. On multiple occasions I’ve had stuff in my freezer for a few weeks that looks more like it’s in a ziplock vs vacuum sealed bag

  • I buy in bulk and on sale and store foods in my upright freezer. I also use my Nesco to bag food for sous vide cooking. Buying on sale pays for the food sealer over time. The rolls are more expensive than they should be. That is where a lot of profit is for these companies. I buy generic rather than name brand rolls. They work just as well for me and are cheaper.

  • I’ve had the VS12 for nearly 2 years, using it at least once a week for multiple batches. I will say it is much better than the Nutrichef one I had previously, by leaps and bounds. However, last month it developed a small bubble on one of the sealing plates, which burns through the bags causing the seal to fail. I have to use double sealing every time now.

The safest, most field-tested choice with the best warranty

Why it ranks here. The default because it has been around longest and the old ones refuse to die: owners talk about units from 2012, from 2015, and from twenty years ago, usually with one gasket change, and a thirty-year owner has had exactly three. The moist button seals wet food no matter what, and the five-year warranty comes from a company that only makes food preservation gear.

It is bigger and louder than newer machines; a fifteen-year owner calls theirs gigantic and disgustingly loud and found a cheap Anova far quieter and just as good. Bags get pricey, and the entry models struggle with liquids unless you double-seal.

What owners like

  • Ten to twenty years on one motor
  • Five-year warranty
  • Moist mode seals anything

What owners complain about

  • Big and loud
  • Struggles with liquids
  • Pricey bags

we replaced the gasket about 6 years ago. Our foodsaver has got to be 20+ years old at this point. Still works fine, although we do have a chamber vac now that handles liquids much better.— Reddit comment · u/PersistentCookie · r/sousvide · 2026-01-11

  • Just as a heads up, those bags are a huge pain in the ass. Yes, they’re “technically” re-usable, but cleaning them takes a bit and if *any* gunk gets into the seal area, the bag is shot. As someone who started with the latter. Just get the Foodsaver. Pretty sure Amazon has a bunch of open box deals on them at the moment too.

Anova sous vide owners who want a matching compact unit

Why it ranks here. The sealer Anova sous vide owners buy to match: compact, quiet, and for half its owners a strong seal every time. One seals raw and cooked barbecue meat with a full seal always, and a convert from another brand calls it miles ahead of anything else.

It is the most argued-about machine here. The other half report air creeping back into bags within hours, enough to make food float in the bath, one gets one good seal in ten, and one tossed theirs inside six months. The split usually comes down to wrinkles and slack at the seal line, and FoodSaver rolls need double sealing. Warranty claims have required video proof using Anova's own bags, and the paper in the box is not a manual, so watch a video first.

What owners like

  • Compact and quiet
  • Strong seal with a flat, slack bag

What owners complain about

  • Air returns for a vocal minority
  • Warranty demands video proof
  • No real manual

I have the Anova, and it works well for me. I seal a lot of raw meat and cooked bbq meat. I always let the meat cool first and then seal it cold with the hardened tallow/fat. Occasionally, there is some fluid that gets through, but it always makes a full seal.— YouTube comment · stboydpt · 2026

  • My Anova Culinary Precision Sealer Pro is really disappointing. If I vacuum and seal an item, within an hour or two there is air in the bag. If I'm sous vide cooking something, it will be enough for it to float.

Budget buyers who seal often, back to back

Why it ranks here. The cheap compact sealer people buy when the FoodSaver or Anova dies, with one clear advantage: it seals bag after bag with no cool-down. One owner says it pulls a really good seal and outperformed a dearer machine at half the size.

It has far fewer long-term owners than the top three, and a noticeable share of them had a unit fail: one died after short use, one vacuums but will not seal, one makes no sound at all though the lights work. It is a fair gamble, and that is what it is.

What owners like

  • No cool-down between bags
  • Compact and cheap

What owners complain about

  • Durability unproven
  • Several units vacuum but will not seal

Hunters, homesteaders and bulk sealers with liquids or mason jars

Why it ranks here. The machine people graduate to after burning through suction sealers: a chamber pulls the air out of everything, so liquids and marinades seal fine, mason jars fit, and the bags are plain and cheap. One owner says it makes the FoodSaver seem like a toy, all stainless with a heavy acrylic lid and no regrets, and another finds the seal way more reliable than a Nesco whose tape wore out.

It is large, heavy and hogs counter space; one owner warns that if it lives in a cupboard you will stop using it, and the chamber is surprisingly shallow. Bags top out around ten by fourteen inches, so big cuts need portioning, and a three-year owner bought a second unit for large jobs. The middle of the chamber market is not automatically the sweet spot.

What owners like

  • Seals liquids and jars
  • Far more reliable, cheaper bags
  • Stainless build

What owners complain about

  • Large and heavy
  • Bag size limit
  • Expensive

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chamber sealer, or is a suction sealer enough?

For most homes a suction sealer is enough, while a chamber sealer pays off for hunters, homesteaders and anyone sealing liquids in bulk.

Why does my sealed bag lose its seal or fill back up with air?

Almost always a wrinkle at the seal line or too little flat bag beyond the food, and running the seal twice fixes most of it.

How long do vacuum sealers last?

Five to twenty years for the proven brands with a gasket change, while some compact units have died within six months to two years.

Can I use cheaper generic bags?

Usually, though the cheapest bags seal worse and some machines want their own double-textured bags.
