Best for
Salsa, pico de gallo, and batch-dicing tomatoes, onions and peppers
Mechanism
Press-and-slam grid with interchangeable blade inserts

Why it ranks here. Fullstar is the most searched, most watched and most discussed chopper on the market, and the brand people name unprompted in Reddit cooking threads. It has the largest pool of detailed owner feedback of any product here, both glowing and pointed.

Owners use it for salsa, pico de gallo, chopped salad and canning tomatoes by the bushel. One calls it 'best purchase ever', another, after a drawer of failed gadgets, 'the first chopper that actually works'. The technique matters: 'smacking it makes it work', a slow press does not. The recurring complaint is size. 'The blade grid opening on this is exactly as big as a Post-It note', so an onion has to be quartered first, and three viewers decided after watching the prep that a knife and board is less work. Garlic smears rather than dices, and the blade organiser takes 'soooo long' to work out.

What owners like

  • The most discussed chopper in the category by far, and owners still recommend it years after buying
  • Once you learn the trick, a hard slam rather than a slow press, it tears through tomatoes, onions and peppers: 'smacking it makes it work'
  • One owner with a drawer of failed gadgets calls it 'the first chopper that actually works'

What owners complain about

  • The grid is small: 'exactly as big as a Post-It note', so onions and potatoes need quartering first
  • Garlic smears into a paste instead of dicing
  • The many blade inserts are fiddly to sort and store

  • I picked a Fullstar model and it feels like a good quality product. It had an enormous number of reviews, but you’d have to ¼ an onion just to dice it and I’d rather have something larger. The blade grid opening on this is exactly as big as a Post-It note.

  • If you're looking for a versatile option, the Mueller Pro-Series and Fullstar Vegetable Chopper are both popular choices for handling a variety of tasks, especially dicing vegetables and speeding up meal prep.

  • Thank you for this excellent review and demonstration. With all the cutting and prep of the veggies beforehand, it's convinced me that I really don't need one of these in my life. If I have to do all that prep, I'd just as soon as keep on going and chop it on the board. One board to clean, one knife to clean. Not countless little pieces with extremely dangerous blades. Thank you for helping me make my decision.

  • I used it on onion and it was great as no tears shed, but dang did nothing to the garlic but make it stick/shmush on the cutter. I'm thinking next time to sandwich the garlic between the onion and see if I can fool this machine.

Best for
Fast onion and pepper prep, and batch pico de gallo
Mechanism
Press-down grid with 8 swappable blades

Why it ranks here. Mueller is Fullstar's closest rival and is compared against it in every thread and head-to-head video. It has a review with hundreds of comments and a long Reddit endorsement, which gives it a large base of owner reactions.

New owners are quickly pleased: 'I can make chopped onions and pepper's super quick', 'The product does what it says it does', and one makes a week of pico de gallo in a batch. The structural complaint is that the pusher plate cannot be removed, so juice gets trapped behind it and can mould; older models let you take it out. One buyer with arthritis could not get the pieces together and calls it a 'Waste of $30'. Others point out that you still have to chop everything small first, the grater looks like 'a lot of trouble for nothing', and one says the company does not reply about its older model.

What owners like

  • Quick on onions and peppers: 'I can make chopped onions and pepper's super quick', and 'The product does what it says it does'
  • One owner batches pico de gallo for several meals at a time
  • The widest set of blades in this ranking, covering slicing, dicing and grating in one box

What owners complain about

  • The pusher plate cannot be removed, so juice pools behind it and can mould
  • Hard on hands: one buyer with arthritis could not assemble it and calls it a 'Waste of $30'
  • Still needs vegetables pre-cut to fit the small dicing grid, like its rivals

  • The Mueller Pro-Series feels sturdy and well-built. The sharp blades are made from high-quality stainless steel, which means they stay sharp longer and cut cleanly... Before getting this chopper, meal prep used to feel like a chore, taking up so much time. Now, I can whip up salads or side dishes in half the time!

Best for
Buyers who want a trusted, well-built brand and minimal blade handling
Mechanism
Press-chop mechanism with an easy-pour storage container

Why it ranks here. OXO is the name people reach for when they want something sturdier than the generic Amazon choppers, and it is benchmarked against Mueller and Fullstar in comparison videos. Fewer reviews than either, but a loyal, quality-minded following.

Fans like the brand and the build: 'OXO products are good', and in one rough review 'it held up'. It sells for $20 to $30, though one viewer had seen it at $50. The detractors are blunt. 'It doesn't chop uniformly, is messy to empty and clean up, has too small a capacity', 'a one trick pony', and 'It should be bigger so we don't have to chop the vegetables before we chop the vegetables'. One tip from a viewer: take the bottom off and chop straight onto a board. One couple splits the difference, a chef's knife for him and the OXO for her.

What owners like

  • Survived a deliberately rough review: 'Your pretty rough on that chopper but it held up'
  • The pour-spout container makes emptying easier, and the base comes off so you can chop straight onto a board
  • A trusted name for buyers who do not want to handle loose blades: 'OXO products are good'

What owners complain about

  • Small: 'It should be bigger so we don't have to chop the vegetables before we chop the vegetables'
  • 'It doesn't chop uniformly, is messy to empty and clean up', says one owner who advises avoiding it
  • Seen from $20 to $50, and 'a one trick pony' to some at any price

Vidalia Chop Wizard

Original and Chop Wizard Pro

Illustration of Vidalia Chop Wizard Illustration of the product
Vidalia Chop Wizard — thumbnail of a cited video review ▶ From a video review of this product Check price on Amazon →

affiliate link · goes to an Amazon search for this product

Best for
Buyers who want proof a chopper can last well over a decade
Mechanism
Press-down lid over a fixed cutting grid, with included cleaning comb

Why it ranks here. The Vidalia Chop Wizard is the original As Seen On TV chopper, and it has the longest owner history of any product here: people have had theirs since 2006. That is durability data newer choppers cannot match.

The loyalty is unusual. One owner has had hers 'for at least 18 years' and gives it '10 out of 10'; a couple have used theirs since 2006 and keep a spare; another has made 'several thousand chops' on the fine grate without anything breaking. It is bigger than the newer NutriChopper and 'doesn't pinch your hand'. The failure that unhappy owners report is the base: the feet push through the bottom under pressure, and one owner had two break that way, leaving 'shards of hard plastic in the food'. Onion sticks in the grid and 'takes forever to be cleaned', though fans say the comb clears it if you use it the right way. Celery and onion take real force, and the container is too small for fries.

What owners like

  • Owners since 2006, one 'for at least 18 years', and 'several thousand chops' without anything breaking
  • Bigger than the newer NutriChopper, and it 'doesn't pinch your hand'
  • The comb tool clears the grid, if you use it to lift the food out rather than scrape

What owners complain about

  • The plastic feet can push through the base under heavy pressure; one owner had two break, leaving 'shards of hard plastic in the food'
  • Onion 'takes forever to be cleaned' out of the grid, and celery takes real force
  • The container is too small for fries or julienne

affiliate link · goes to an Amazon search for this product

Best for
Camping, tiny kitchens, and quick pulses like salsa or nut milk
Mechanism
Pull-cord rotary blade inside a bowl, like a mini salad spinner

Why it ranks here. Brieftons works differently: a pull cord spins a blade inside a bowl, like a mini salad spinner. Its demo video has 1.4 million views and a stream of unprompted comments from campers and small-kitchen cooks, even though it sells far less than Fullstar or Mueller.

Owners like it for what it is: 'we take it with us camping, light weight perfect so easy to use', 'my onion chopping tearless', cauliflower and broccoli rice that came out 'perfect', and a five-year-old who helps with the vegetables. An off-grid chef wants one for nut milk. The recurring doubt is the cord. A chef asks how you replace it 'after it breaks (and it will break at some point....)', and another owner switched to a crank-style chopper because 'strings eventually snap'. One owner sums it up: 'they are limited in what they can actually cut, but they work extremely well'.

What owners like

  • Light and compact: 'we take it with us camping, light weight perfect so easy to use'
  • Tearless onions, and cauliflower and broccoli rice that came out 'perfect'
  • Simple enough that one owner's five-year-old helps with it

What owners complain about

  • The pull cord wears out: 'it will break at some point', and one owner moved to a crank-style chopper for that reason
  • 'limited in what they can actually cut' compared with a knife or a grid chopper
  • A 3-cup bowl, built for quick batches rather than bulk prep

Frequently asked questions

Do I still have to cut vegetables before using a chopper?

Yes. Every grid chopper here has a grid about the size of a Post-it note, so onions need quartering and tomatoes halving first.

Why does my chopper get stuck?

A slow press jams it. Owners say a hard slam works: "smacking it makes it work". Garlic never works and turns into paste.

Which chopper lasts?

The Vidalia Chop Wizard, with owners since 2006. Its weak point is the feet, which can push through the base under heavy pressure. Pull-cord choppers like the Brieftons wear out the cord.
