Why it ranks here. The best-selling adult helmet on Amazon and the one riders name for a real brand with MIPS at a commuter price: light at about 310 grams, 22 vents, and owners who hit their heads and walked away. One came off his bike, did not feel a thing, and bought another.

Big or odd-shaped heads struggle to get it snug; one owner with a big noggin found helmets have got smaller, including the same model in the same size. It looks like the commuter helmet it is, and the clip-on rear light owners like is sold separately.

  • Thanks for the review. I have a big noghin too and recently broke the adjuster on my current helmet, a Kali Chakra. Upon trying on multiple helmets at my local bike shop, I realized helmets have gotten smaller, including the same model in the supposed same size as what I have now.. I hate buying stuff I can't try on first, especially when it comes to my cranium, but I may not have a choice.

Why it ranks here. The most-reviewed budget mountain and all-round helmet on YouTube: 330 grams, 18 vents with good ventilation on long rides, and a visor that swaps in seconds. Even a MIPS sceptic rates the value five out of five.

The straps barely adjust, so it fits Giro's head shape or it does not, and a 60-centimetre head inside the size chart had to return it. It presses the temples of sunglasses at the ears, which means nose pain after two hours. Riders doubt the MIPS version tests safer than the plain one.

  • Fixture MIPS is light, but it's definitely not comfortable. There isn't much adjusting the straps, so if your ears or head don't fit the Giro helmet model, it's better to avoid buying it.

  • Hi. Do you have a problem with sunglasses? I have a problem with sunglasses. The helmet presses the temples of the glasses in the area of the ears and causes the glasses to squeeze in the area of the nose. When you have been cycling for 2 hours you can notice a lot of pain in the nose

  • Nate, thank you. I'd pretty much settled on this helmet, but your video made me want to expedite. I'm 68 yrs old and last year a Bell helmet with MiPS literally saved my life. No question. A sideways front tire slip taking me down from my 29er onto the concrete like the head of an axe chopping wood. I couldn't believe I was still alive. Second childhood rocks. Way better toys. Respects.

Why it ranks here. r/bicycling's favourite cheap helmet, and the one with data behind it: Virginia Tech's lab gave it five stars and ranked it 62nd of 269 helmets, great for the price. It weighs under 300 grams without the visor, has great airflow, mesh over the vents keeps wasps out, and one owner says he cannot afford not to buy one.

The company does not answer its phone; one would-be buyer got a full voicemail box, no email reply, and wonders if it is still in business. Sizing runs small by the brand's own chart, and it scored slightly worse than the average five-star helmet on the hardest impacts.

  • Actually there are lots of lightweight helmets weights below 300g but their pretty pricey. Giro Aether Spherical 280g for $225 and Lazer G1 MIPS 235g for $250. If you don't chase some extreme lightweight, both Outdoor Master Gem MIPS and POC Axion SPIN works great. GEM MIPS 300g for around $70,POC Axion SPIN 350g for $75.I had both, they don't differ too much from each other except for the weight, both shares good venting, very compact and comfortable.

  • It's actually the only helmet from the brand that has been tested and rated by Virginia Tech's helmet testing lab... that Gem helmet earned a 5 star rating. Its STAR value score of 11.03 ranked #62 of 269 helmets tested. In comparison to the average five-star rated helmet, VT determined that the Gem helmet scored slightly better on low impact severity (representing "common impacts in cycling"), and just a bit worse than the average five-star rated helmet on high impact severity (representing "the types of impacts most commonly resulting in concussions"). But that's still pretty good. GREAT, for the price.

  • Nice helmet for the price. The mesh also helps keeping bugs out. Getting a bee or wasp inside can be a scary experience. I bought a Bontrager solstice helmet last year. 50 GBP with MIPS. Nice comfy helmet that I use for gravel riding.

Why it ranks here. Trek's budget MIPS helmet, with a magnetic buckle, a fit some prefer to Giro's, and a crash-replacement programme owners have actually used: crash it in the first year and they replace it free, as one rider discovered after his recent spill. Very comfortable on sale.

It is only cheap on sale. The WaveCel sibling runs hot, making one owner's head sweat like crazy on a ride that used to freeze him. A light strapped over the shell blocks the MIPS layer so it cannot move.

  • I talked to my LBS about it when I went to buy a new one, Bontrager only replaces crashed helmets within a year of purchase, I bought this one in April of last year. What I have learned from this is that I must crash this helmet in less than 1 year.

  • I got a bontrager helmet with the wavecell technology. I'm my opinion it seriously lacks any airflow. It's winter now. My head sweats like crazy on the same ride that used to freeze with my old helmet with good airflow. I've returned my Wavecell helmet.

  • You should not attach the light on top of the helmet the way you did. It is blocking the MIPS layer, so it will not move and protect your brain in case of crash. You have to put the light strap between the EPS foam and the MIPS layer.
