Why it ranks here. The Thermapen ONE wins every side-by-side test for a reason: a true one-second read, tight accuracy, and a body that comes out of the deep fryer working. It ranks first because pros and owners of many years say so. Its one fault is the $109 list price, which nobody who waits for a sale pays.
'I dropped my thermapen into a pot of 350° frying oil for about 30 seconds'↗, says one owner. 'That was 3 years ago and it still works like the day I bought it'↗. A professional cook did the same: 'I once dropped it into the deep fryer. Grabbed tongs, pulled it out- no damage'↗. The speed changes habits: 'Literally 1 second update has made actually checking temps convenient'↗, and one owner has 'purchased them as gifts for half of my family'↗. A former cheap-thermometer owner says it is 'in a completely different category of quality'↗. When an original Thermapen stopped working after years, 'They repaired it for free and sent it back'↗. On price: 'anyone who would pay that is not paying attention'↗, since 'They ALWAYS have some sort of "special" going on'↗. The gripes are small: no built-in magnet, and a probe that could swing further for left-handers.

People can rationalize whatever their choice is from now to near forever, but there's a reason that the Thermopen one is top rated by more professional cooking people than any other. While you are technically correct that their LIST price is $109 anyone who would pay that is not paying attention. They ALWAYS have some sort of "special" going on pricing and the typical average over time allows you to purchase one in the $60-75 range depending on your patience level. Still not cheap but if value is important it's very competitive for a top of the heap performer.

I've had the Thermopen One for a few years now and the biggest thing is that it makes you a healthier cook. Getting temps on a grill or in a smoker is a pain when your thermometer takes 8-10 seconds. Literally 1 second update has made actually checking temps convenient. I've now purchased them as gifts for half of my family.

I used a classic Thermapen for years and didn't hesitate to buy the Thermapen One when it came out. I've used the others -- even bought them for people who had no instant read thermometer. They work, but for something I use and rely upon every damned day, it's a no-brainer to pay for the best. Words can't capture how much the small differences make life easier.

I've been using the Thermapen One for a year now and I'm really happy with it's performance. Readings are quick and accurate. Here in the UK it's a favourite in commercial kitchens. If there's anything I'd like to see improved on it if would be a the ability to use it left handed (by allowing the probe to swing further) and possibly a temperature lock but I can live without those features.

Bought a cheapo one on Amazon and it was ok the first couple months but then just started acting up. Went and got a thermapen mk4 and not looking back. It’s super frustrating when you need it to work and it doesn’t so I’d say with the amount I use it for me it’s a no brainer. If you are planning on using it a lot it’s worth the investment, definitely in a completely different category of quality

I work in a professional kitchen and I only use a Thermapen. Spot on calibration, fast readings, and durable. I once dropped it into the deep fryer. Grabbed tongs, pulled it out- no damage.

I still have the Thermapen original which is very slow but still good enough for me. I had to send it in a few years ago because it stopped working. They repaired it for free and sent it back. Since then, the battery door has broken. I simply taped it down and it is still going strong. However, if I ever replaced this, I would go for whatever is the top-of-the-line at the time. Then that one should take me to end of my time here on earth!

I have the Thermapen One and it's great, but it still irritates me that I had to buy the magnetic sleeve for it . . . so I think it's a huge plus that the Sizzle now includes a magnet.
