Ring Protect, about $50 a year

Why it ranks here. Ring is the doorbell most people own, with the sharpest 2K picture, colour night vision, the deepest Alexa ecosystem, and owners eight years in. It ranks first for that. Its owners' one shared complaint is a subscription that keeps rising, and its live view can take two minutes to connect.

'I have a dusk-to-dawn porch light and the night vision color is spectacular', says one owner. Another's 'rings are 8 years old' and still recording. A couple installed it together and 'we are still married'. A whole-house Ring owner pays $200 a year with monitoring and gets a $125 insurance discount: 'really hard to beat'. Then the subscription: 'The Ring subscriptions have gone up by 42% here in the UK, 2 years ago, they were £24.99, last year £34.99, this year coming £49.99 - no way am I paying that increase!'. Another is 'thinking about switching to Blink' over the $50. Live view: 'someone rings the doorbell, I hit it, and it spins for 2 minutes before connecting'. And the renter mount: 'after 2 days it fell off'. Batteries are rated for 500 to 1,000 charges, then need replacing.

What owners like

  • 'the night vision color is spectacular'
  • 'My rings are 8 years old' and still recording
  • Alexa, Echo and the biggest community online

What owners complain about

  • A subscription 'gone up by 42% here in the UK', to £49.99
  • Live view that 'spins for 2 minutes before connecting'
  • A renter mount where 'after 2 days it fell off'

  • I've got Arlo Cameras and Ring Doorbells. The Arlo cameras work well and I like their interface. I just replaced one of my Ring's with with the Arlo doorbell because after 2 years, Ring decided to not work on my wifi network anymore (including a brand new unit). For me live view and live conversation on both don't work well. For Ring, someone rings the doorbell, I hit it, and it spins for 2 minutes before connecting (even if I'm in the house on the same network).

  • I have the ring doorbell and don't like that I miss motion alert at times and that's after I enhance my settings. My son has blink with the sync module... He loves it and I didn't see a huge difference in the camera quality from my Ring. I'm thinking about switching to Blink due to the fact Ring just increased their annual subscription to $50 just to save videos etc.

  • We have Ring alarm along with doorbells, indoor/outdoor cameras. We pay $200 a year and it includes 24/7 monitoring, warranty on all our Ring devices while subscription is active and constant recording. The best part is home insurance is discounted $125 a year because of the monitored alarm. So it's really hard to beat $75 a year.

Battery

Nest Aware for full history; 3 hours free

Why it ranks here. The Nest Doorbell is the one for a Google home: sleek, wired into Nest speakers and displays, with face recognition and three hours of free history, and the longest battery of any battery doorbell at four to six months. It ranks second because its clips start late, it hangs when someone actually presses the button, and it fights you when you pull it off to charge.

'Integrates brilliantly with my nest hubs an nest speakers. I really recommend buying this doorbell', says one owner. Another's 'lasted almost 6 months before needing recharging'. One paid for itself 'when a stranger arrived silently at my front door at 1:15am'. Renters use no-drill holders. Then the timing: 'Most time an event is triggered, it doesn't start recording until halfway through or until the person is essentially already gone!'. The button: 'When someone pushes the button I get notified' but 'more often than not, I just get spinning circle and Talk button not available'. A years-long owner's hubs now time out on a ring. Charging: on the second attempt, the doorbell 'wouldn't budge' from its mount. And one switcher: 'Eufy might not look as sleek, but it's a million times better in every way'.

What owners like

  • 'Integrates brilliantly with my nest hubs an nest speakers'
  • 'lasted almost 6 months before needing recharging'
  • Three hours of free history and on-device face recognition

What owners complain about

  • 'it doesn't start recording until halfway through or until the person is essentially already gone!'
  • On a press, 'I just get spinning circle and Talk button not available'
  • A doorbell that 'wouldn't budge' from its mount at charging time

Have had these doorbells since launch... Most time an event is triggered, it doesn't start recording until halfway through or until the person is essentially already gone! I wish it could function to record 30 seconds before the event actually began... Overall though, I like the doorbell better than when we had nothing! It looks sleek, has acceptable machine learning with the person, animal, package detection, and the notifications come in pretty fast. Just kinda wish we waited and explored other options before purchasing right at launch.— YouTube comment · juliab516 · 2022-02-25

  • FYI: For Renters, there are plenty of door holders for this doorbell so you can install without drilling and it covers the removal so people can't steal it (without opening the door).

  • I was one of the first to get the Nest Hello doorbell when it came out and I've absolutely loved it for a few years now. But I've recently started having problems with it... when someone rings the doorbell, the video never shows up on my Google Hub displays. It just spins and eventually times out... It's only when someone actually rings the doorbell. So I can't see them or talk to them.

Battery
3 weeks to several months
Subscription
None; 8 GB built in

Why it ranks here. The E340 is the answer to subscription fatigue: 8 gigabytes of storage inside, two 2K cameras with one aimed at the doorstep for parcels, and a lower price than Ring. It ranks third because its battery life is a lottery, from three weeks to a year, it misses people standing at the door, and its battery cannot be replaced.

'Best feature is being able to check while I am in another state with no fees', says one owner, who added two Eufy cameras after the doorbell. Another shrugs at recharging: 'if I'm charging every 5 weeks so be it still beats paying for a monthly subscription'. 'Yeah the no subscription is worth it'. The battery: 'the battery is not going to last you a year. Mine last about two months'; another 'every 3 weeks lol'. A year-long owner reports 'slow response for video intercom unacceptable' and now hardwires it. Detection: 'there was someone literally 5 feet from it at my door and it didn't notify me'. One buyer of eight Eufy devices returned them all for Ring because 'They lagged on viewing the live videos'. And the battery is sealed, unlike Arlo's.

What owners like

  • 'check while I am in another state with no fees'
  • A second lens aimed at the step for parcels
  • 'still beats paying for a monthly subscription'

What owners complain about

  • 'the battery is not going to last you a year. Mine last about two months', or 'every 3 weeks'
  • 'someone literally 5 feet from it at my door and it didn't notify me'
  • 'slow response for video intercom unacceptable', and a sealed battery

I have mine set for human only sensitivity level two front door fairly active so if I'm charging every 5 weeks so be it still beats paying for a monthly subscription.— YouTube comment · robertjakicic5878 · 2021-11-24

  • I picked up 8 new Eufy devices and started to replace them with my Ring setup... they looked good and worked okay but then they just weren't great. They lagged on viewing the live videos, they did not record so you had to sign up for subscription which I was under the impression that you didn't have to do. Battery
Up to 2 years claimed; one died at 11 months
Subscription
Optional; local storage via Sync Module

Why it ranks here. The Blink is a third of Ring's price, runs on AA batteries, and its subscription is cheap or optional. It ranks fourth because its app opens so slowly the visitor has gone, its clips start after the motion, alerts arrive minutes late, and one unit died at eleven months.

'Most all our cameras are Blink including the doorbell. Very happy with them', says one owner. Another has run three cameras on a $10 plan 'for going on three years, has worked great', though 'they can't even read a license plate'. The app is the trouble: 'the app takes sooo long to open, it makes it useless when someone rings the doorbell, by the time you open the app they're gone'. Another: 'By the time it loads its to late or won't load at all'. Clips: 'Half of my Blink recordings are blank because the movement is already out of the frame'. Alerts arrive 'sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes 2–3 minutes' late. One doorbell 'stopped working' at 11 months with no battery warning, and its owner is paying $275 to go back to Ring.

What owners like

  • About a third of Ring's price, with a cheap plan for unlimited cameras
  • 'Very happy with them as they are wireless inside and out'
  • AA batteries and local storage with the Sync Module

What owners complain about

  • 'Half of my Blink recordings are blank because the movement is already out of the frame'
  • Alerts 'sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes 2–3 minutes' late, and a doorbell dead at 11 months

The problem with blink is that the app takes sooo long to open, it makes it useless when someone rings the doorbell, by the time you open the app they're gone. No wonder that have a 2 star review on the app/play store I'll be switching to ring soon— YouTube comment · timyassa4343 · 2023-10-22

  • I have both and I like the cost of Blink but the video quality and advance video recording is 10x better with Ring. Blink doesn't roll back a few seconds to catch the entire movement like Ring does. Half of my Blink recordings are blank because the movement is already out of the frame

  • The Blink doorbell camera lured me in with the cheaper price as opposed to my old Ring camera and that the battery would last a year. Well 11 months later my doorbell camera stopped working and no notification from Blink as to the battery status. The quality wasn't as good as my old Ring doorbell. So I have made the decision to trash my Blink and switch back to Ring camera. It's going to cost me about $275 but it will be worth it to get back to a quality device.

Why it ranks here. Arlo's doorbell has a square head-to-toe picture some rate above Ring's, and a plan that is cheap if you own a lot of cameras. It ranks last because nothing records without a subscription, adding a chime pushed one owner from $9.99 to $29.99 a month, and units go offline after a power flicker or a failed update.

An owner of 28 Arlo cameras pays '$20/ month' and has had no failures in six years. One prefers its interface to Ring's. Then the plan: one owner set it up, and it did not ring; the app 'says my plan only covers a single device, and I have to upgrade from the $9.99/mo plan to the $29.99/mo plan', for a chime. 'Arlo = nickeled and dimed to death', says another: 'the cameras become worthless once you stop your subscription'. 'No local storage. Need monthly subcription, not good'. Reliability: 'if my electricity flickers out for even a second, Arlo goes offline' and needs a manual reset. One doorbell went offline on 'a firmware update failure' with its owner 500 miles away. In the Midwest, below five degrees, one 'rings and rings and won't stop'. Arlo's support says the button press itself notifies without a plan.

What owners like

  • A square head-to-toe picture some rate above Ring's
  • '$20/ month' for 28 cameras, and six years without a failure for one owner
  • The doorbell press notifies without a plan, per Arlo

What owners complain about

  • A chime that forced 'the $9.99/mo plan to the $29.99/mo plan'
  • 'No local storage. Need monthly subcription, not good'
  • 'Arlo goes offline' after a flicker, and 'a firmware update failure' bricked one remotely

So I set it up, added it to the app, and it doesn't ring. I'm like, what did I do wrong. So I go into the app again, and it now says my plan only covers a single device, and I have to upgrade from the $9.99/mo plan to the $29.99/mo plan. What? ... How can you have a doorbell without a chime? I'd totally get it if I was adding a second camera.— Reddit post · u/ivantos09 · r/arlo · 2026-07-20

  • To clarify, an Arlo Secure subscription is not required for your Arlo Chime 2 or Arlo Video Doorbell to notify you when someone presses the doorbell button.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subscription?

For Ring, Google Nest and Arlo, yes, if you want to save or review clips: roughly $3 to $10 a month. Live view and the doorbell press work free. Eufy stores clips on 8 gigabytes inside the doorbell at no charge, and Blink's optional Sync Module keeps clips locally.

How long does the battery really last?

Not what the box says. Ring claims months, Eufy up to a year, Blink two years on AA cells. Owners report everything from three weeks to five months depending on foot traffic and motion settings, and Ring batteries fade after a few years of charging. A busy front door means charging often.

Can I fit one to a rented door without drilling?

Yes, with a mount that clamps over the door's edge. Adhesive mounts fail: one Ring owner's doorbell fell off Ring's own renter mount after two days.

Which has the best picture?

Ring's 2K and Eufy's dual 2K cameras, with Eufy's second lens angled down to show parcels on the step. Nest and Arlo use a square frame that shows a visitor head to toe. Blink is the weakest, especially at night.

Which lasts longest?

Ring has owners at seven and eight years. Eufy and Blink owners report more inconsistency with batteries and missed events. Arlo owners describe bigger failures, like a firmware update bricking the doorbell while they were away.
