Why it ranks here. The C920 is the most reviewed webcam on the internet and the default answer in every which-webcam thread since 2012. Sharp 1080p, plug it in and it works, $60 to $80. It ranks first because nothing has displaced it in thirteen years, not for being the best picture here.

'for anyone second guessing grabbing a c920, it's definitely worth it. moreso than more expensive' premium webcams, says a year-long owner. It is 'a great camera and the built in Microphone works'. A 2022 buyer got the base model 'for 35 quid' and finds it 'decent for the price even in 2022'. The limits are known: 30 frames, so fast motion shows 'ghosting and stutter'; a mic that serious streamers replace; and a box with no instructions, which sends new buyers to YouTube. Its other problem is popularity. During the pandemic Amazon was 'price gouging', with $70 units 'listed on amazon is like 180+', and the pattern returns whenever demand spikes. Buy it at $70, never at $140.

What owners like

  • 'it's definitely worth it. moreso than more expensive' premium webcams, from a year-long owner
  • Plug-and-play, with no drivers and no app
  • $60 to $80 at normal prices, and 'decent for the price even in 2022'

What owners complain about

  • Capped at 30 frames: 'The ghosting and stutter makes it looks <30fps'
  • A mic that is fine for calls and replaced by streamers
  • Price gouging when stock runs short: 'like 180+' for a $70 camera

Price
$130 to $200
Resolution

Why it ranks here. The Brio is Logitech's 4K flagship, the premium upgrade Reddit names, with a 90-degree field of view that teachers and presenters use and dual mics good enough to skip a separate one. It ranks second because Logitech's software and USB quirks generate as many complaints as the picture generates praise.

A Zoom dance teacher calls it 'a must' for 'The wide angle' when she steps back to teach. Its 'dual mics on the Brio are amazing', and its 1080p 'is BETTER on the Brio than the C922'. The strangest endorsement comes from a vacuum lab where hot metal vapour coats the lens: they 'buy them 6 at a time' for 'the image quality and ability to remotely adjust focus'. The other column is software and ports. One TikTok streamer with a Mac tried everything and still gets asked 'why is it blurry'; another returned an MX Brio for an Insta360 with substantially more control; Logitech's own community person admits the MX Brio 'looked rough out of the box' until tuned. No Windows Hello on the 4K model, and a couple of cables and ports have died.

What owners like

  • 4K with a 90-degree view: 'a must' for a teacher who steps back from the screen
  • 'dual mics on the Brio are amazing', enough to skip a separate mic
  • A lab buys them '6 at a time' for the picture and remote focus

What owners complain about

  • Logitech's software: one streamer tuned everything and still hears 'why is it blurry'
  • The MX Brio 'looked rough out of the box' by Logitech's own admission, and one was returned for an Insta360
  • No Windows Hello on the 4K model

  • For those folks who work in some the sciences, I can recommend the “Logitech Brio 4K Webcam”. We use it a hard vacuum, occasionally it’s lens gets coated with hot metal vapor, which carefully polish off... When that happens I thank the camera for its service, tip it into the bin, and install another Logitech Brio (we buy them 6 at a time). In this price range, the image quality and ability to remotely adjust focus are a the reason we keep using this camera to record action in a place no human could ever go.

Price
$99 to $200
Resolution
1080p at 60 fps

Why it ranks here. The Kiyo Pro is the step-up webcam for streamers leaving the C920: 1080p at 60 frames, an HDR light sensor and a picture that wins side-by-side comparisons. It ranks third because it disconnects, a problem Razer's own forum knows about, and because its $200 list price is only good at the $99 sale.

In a multi-camera comparison one viewer's 'eyes landed on the Kiyo' every time: 'The sharp image and higher contrast made every image pop so much more than the others'. Another found it 'way more defined' than the AverMedia and the Logitech. At '99$' on sale it is 'a good deal', and a first-time Twitch streamer felt he had 'made a good move'. Then the disconnects. 'Razer Kiyo Pro keeps disconnecting' is a thread on Razer's own forum; one owner's system 'has issues driving it'; another with the cheaper Kiyo X is 'tempted to swap it out' for an Elgato. The contrast that makes it pop also whitens skin a little, which one owner likes because 'this makes imperfections of the skin go away'.

What owners like

  • 'The sharp image and higher contrast made every image pop so much more than the others'
  • 1080p at 60 frames with an adaptive light sensor
  • '99$' on sale, from a $200 list price

What owners complain about

  • 'Razer Kiyo Pro keeps disconnecting', on Razer's own forum, and firmware updates have not settled it
  • Owners 'tempted to swap it out' for an Elgato Facecam
  • Contrast that flattens skin detail

Loved the Razer Kiyo over... everything else! The sharp image and higher contrast made every image pop so much more than the others. Every time there were multiple cams on the screen, my eyes landed on the Kiyo. Just found it on sale and I'll definitely pick it up. Why it ranks here. The Facecam MK.2 is what streamers on r/Twitch recommend to everyone: a real 1080p60 sensor, full manual control, and a fix for the original Facecam's grain. It ranks fourth because it has fixed focus, no tracking, and no 4K, while newer rivals have all three.

'it's what I recommend to literally everyone', says one streamer. The original Facecam's problem was noise: 'The high level of noise in any but the best lighting has driven me nuts from day 1', and one owner 'felt it was worse than my c920'. The MK.2 'is significantly better', though noise reduction 'is always going to soften an image', and one owner who has both still sees 'grainy visual noise' in uploads. It is fixed focus, so 'the required distance is a bit long for use in my desk setup' for one buyer, who now uses his over a soldering bench. The effects in Camera Hub do not work with AMD Radeon cards. And the same streamer who recommends it says the real fix is light: 'if your lighting is garbage, your video feed will be garbage'.

What owners like

  • 'it's what I recommend to literally everyone', from a working streamer
  • A real 1080p60 and 720p120 sensor with full manual control
  • The original's grain, which 'has driven me nuts from day 1', 'is significantly better' on the MK.2

What owners complain about

  • Fixed focus: 'the required distance is a bit long for use in my desk setup'
  • No tracking, no 4K
  • Camera Hub effects that do not support AMD Radeon cards

I really appreciate the comparison to the OG Facecam (which I have). The high level of noise in any but the best lighting has driven me nuts from day 1. It looks like the Mk.2 is significantly better. Noise reduction is always going to soften an image, but the OG Facecam was brutally noisy. :( I may try the Mk2— YouTube comment · bratling · 2024-03-28

Why it ranks here. The Link 2C is the newest name here: 4K, skin tones that owners say beat the OBSBOT Meet 2, and AI framing without the gimbal of the full Link 2. It ranks last because it is new, its tracking is inconsistent, and its app has raised privacy questions.

'It's miles ahead from the common logitechs and comparable to a DSRL for the untrained eye', with a 'great image in poor light too'. Against the OBSBOT Meet 2 it 'has much better white balance': 'With the Meet 2 I look like a ghost'. The picture 'makes the skin look more realistic'. An MX Brio owner switched to it for substantially more control. The reservations: the AI tracking 'is decent, but I wish it were more consistent'; the price, 'a bit pricey compared to others' at $130 to $150 and up; an echo on FaceTime for one owner; and the app. 'The privacy with the Insta360 Link cameras is definitely concerning', says one viewer, who wonders whether the company trains its AI on users' data.

What owners like

  • 'miles ahead from the common logitechs and comparable to a DSRL for the untrained eye'
  • Skin tones that beat the OBSBOT: 'With the Meet 2 I look like a ghost'
  • 4K with AI framing, and substantially more control than a Logitech

What owners complain about

  • Tracking that 'is decent, but I wish it were more consistent'
  • 'The privacy with the Insta360 Link cameras is definitely concerning' to some owners
  • 'a bit pricey compared to others', and an echo on FaceTime for one owner

  • It's got great image in poor light too. It's an excellent camera. It's miles ahead from the common logitechs and comparable to a DSRL for the untrained eye.

  • Pretty solid cam, though a bit pricey compared to others.

  • I get an echo when I am in FaceTime when I use my Insta360. The only work around I came up with was using my headphones when talking

  • Was waiting for this review. The privacy with the Insta360 Link cameras is definitely concerning. I wonder if they still take user's data to train their AI if you don't use their software, recording with obs directly would be good.

  • I ended up returning the MX Brio, and subbing in an Insta360. A bit more, but hardware is a few years newer, and software offers substantiallly more control. Quality is great.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 4K?

Not for calls. Zoom, Teams and Meet compress and cap the picture, so 1080p at 30 frames is plenty. 4K pays off when you crop into the frame or record footage rather than call someone.

Why does my expensive webcam look bad?

Lighting. Everyone who has tested several webcams says the same: a cheap camera with a lamp on your face beats a dear one in a dark room. 'if your lighting is garbage, your video feed will be garbage.'

Is a webcam better than my phone or a real camera?

No, a phone or mirrorless camera has a bigger sensor and a better picture; owners say an iPhone blows every webcam away. A webcam wins on simplicity: plug it in, no capture card, no overheating, no app to keep it on.

What is the upgrade path?

Streamers give the same one: a Logitech C920 at 1080p30, then an Elgato Facecam or Razer Kiyo Pro at 1080p60, then a mirrorless camera with a capture card. Most people never need the last step.
